Persons needing dry ice must come to the receiving room (0033 Science Hall) and sign out dry ice on an as needed basis. The cost of dry ice is $0.06 per lb for chemistry department customers (a subsidized rate) and $0.20 per lb for non chemistry department customers (the actual cost).
Liquid nitrogen is also dispensed by the Science Stores. The cost is $0.25 per liter for chemistry department customers (the subsidized rate) and $1.00 per liter for non chemistry department customers (the actual cost). Persons filling 160 L dewars are allowed to fill their tanks themselves. We will NOT give the key to anyone who does not have suitable insulated gloves and eye protection. Anyone filling their own dewars must view a safety video tape concerning safe handling of cryogenics liquids at least one time before being allowed access to they key. Smaller dewars are to be filled by the storeroom staff.
Liquid nitrogen and dry ice are not purchased by Science Stores. Science Stores administers the dispensing of these materials on behalf of the Department of Chemistry using charges and procedures established by that department.
